Project Description
After a hard time trying to figure out what I wanted to do for my project 4, I decided I wanted to do something with sports. For this project I took different routs of sports. One being a creation of a soccer ball from scratch, another being a sports bill of rights, and lastly writing a new poem based of the ideas from analyzed poems.
Art
For the art part of my project I began to look at a book called Sport as Symbol. While reading this book I came across a paragraph that talks about a soccer ball not being a essential component of a soccer game. It stalked about how other objects like a bundle of rags, a tin can, etc would work. After reading that it got me thinking of a story my dad had shared with me. In El Salvador most kids and families are too poor to purchase a soccer ball so these kids have to be creative to play the sport they love. My dad talked about how little kid would make soccer balls out of t shirts. For my Art project I made a soccer ball out of plastic bags, paper towels, etc. The thinking skill, synthesis, has a big role in my project because I used different materials you wouldn't think make up a soccer ball. By doing this, I am getting the idea of a sports ball and random objects and creating a new ball that is supposed to replicate the original ball.
This video goes through the process of making a soccer ball out of plastic bags
and then going outside and testing to see how well the new ball works.

History
For the history portion of my project I created a Sports Bill of Rights. In a lot of sports players don't always have a voice for the decision and rules made in the leagues. I got different unfair rules and situations from different sports leagues and made a Bill of Right so that all sports are equal. In my project, synthesis plays a role in the sense that from each sports league I took unfair rules and address them so that all sports are fair.
ELA
In this poem I gained inspiration from 3 different poems and created a new poem. The poem To An Athlete Dying Young talks about how an athlete does not compete on his own, and how there is always a group the athlete is representing. In this new poem, I took this idea and expressed it in the first stanza. That same poem I read was written in an inspirational way. In a way of advice. So with that same idea I wrote the rest of the poem. Another poem written by a Chinese poet, Li-Yu, was written with the same idea of giving advice but this poet also described the soccer playing field. In a poem written by Virgil he shares a description of a jousting event. In this new poem, I try to involve different sports events while still keeping that advice like tone.
Stanza one explains how you're never alone in life, people are always going to support you. Stanza two is about working your hardest, always giving everything 110%. Stanza three is about staying humble and not getting ahead of yourself. Finally, stanza four is about not letting others get to you or not being easily influenced. Just because the people around you are doing bad stuff does not mean you should too.
After reading poems written by Li-Yu and Virgil’s along with the poem An Athlete Dying Young, I gathered ideas and elements to write a new poem. Reading these poems allowed me to see a different style of poetry and helped me gain knowledge of what my new poem should look like. Each of the tree poems share elements in this new poem I have written.

Game of Life
Such a game has many players Some play in teams some play as one No matter what you’re never truly alone There’s always someone in your corner Sometimes we win sometime we lose In the end that's not what matters Knowing you gave it your all is what truly counts Competition is never easy Don't be fooled when winning becomes easy Always keep your gloves up That spotlight could all end in a punch Don't worry about those in the lanes beside you Focus on improving your time You're not always going to be the best Knowing you did your best is what makes you great |
